The first Festival of extreme sports Red Fox Elbrus Race 2008 came on the Elbrus peak

The first Festival of extreme sports Red Fox Elbrus Race took place on the Elbrus peak, the highest top of the Europe, on May 15-18, 2008. The program included: high-speed run to the Elbrus Peak (5642 m height), run on the snow-shoes and ski–mountaineering (vertical race and rally).

That grand event brought together representatives of local municipal administration and Ministry of Emergency Situations, veterans of Russian mountaineering, famous sportsmen and members of the mass media. The best climbers, skiers and multisportsmen came over to compete in different kinds of sport. The Festival organisers - Red Fox company and Russian Mountaineering Federation – have tried to do their best for project's success. All participants and guests could gain an indelible impression from the tense competitions.

Red Fox Elbrus Race was held in real winter weather. The air temperature was 20°C below zero. The participants had to overcome all obstacles, falling in the friable snow and sliding on the ice mountainsides. The first Festival day was dominated by clouds and inevitable consequences of recent snowfall. The high-speed run to the Elbrus Peak, scheduled for 16th May, was postponed to next day. But it couldn’t hinder from sportsmen’s festive mood. In that day they have tried one’s strength in the run on the snow-shoes and ski–mountaineering.

The main Festival judge, legend of Soviet sport and president of the Kazakhstan Republic Mountaineering Federation, Ervand Ilinsky has started the competitions. The competent panel of judges, consisting of such well-known figures as Nikolay Cherniy and Sergey Romanov, has brought even more prestige to the competitions.

On the spectacular course, the sportsmen went on to battle for the glory. Among them - the oldest participant of Festival, the prominent climber Valentin Bozhukov (Moscow), who doughty came all routes along with young racers. The final of the vertical race has proved exciting. Kazakov Maksim and Sofin Rinat, arriving first, got the penalty points for losing the equipment. As a result, Kurchakov Vyacheslav from Moscow, finishing third, became the first leader of the competitions.

The run on the snow-shoes prepared some surprises too. Because of the broken fastening, Roman Gubanov from Tiberda (Russia) had to overpass the final part of the route, carrying the snow-shoes in the arms. The main podium positions felt to “Red Fox Asia” team’s share: Andrey Puchinin (Kazakhstan), Sergey Seliverstov (Kyrgyzstan), Semen Dvornichenko (Kyrgyzstan). Meanwhile in the women's event the youngest sportsman of Red Fox Elbrus Race Maria Popova (Kyrgyzstan) gained the first place.

The main Festival’s event - high-speed run to the Elbrus Peak on the next day - turned out to be tense struggle. It was the hard trial for all participants. All march of events was under exact control of the race director Evgeniy Kolchanov and Ervand Ilinsky. During the competitions Andrey Nefedov and Tatyana Timoshenko worked on the mountain: met the participants and fed them by hot tea. The project co-ordinator Nikolay Cherniy sat up on the Pastuhov rocks. The obligatory self-insurance and excellent work of representatives of Ministry of Emergency Situations have provided the safety of all racers. The winners were determined on the last metres to the summit. Semen Dvornichenko (winner’s time – 2 hours 58 minutes) was just 1,5 minutes ahead of Roman Gubanov, who became the second. A few seconds behind them on the Elbrus Peak was Andrey Puchinin. The women competition was won by Ekaterina Andreeva (Kyrgyzstan, winner’s time – 3 hours 33 minutes). Maria Popova placed second, while third place went to Nadezhda Shubina (Kirov).

The final kind of program – rally – took place on 18th May. It was prestige to win in this competition, because this race was sanctioned as stage of the Russian Ski-mountaineering Cup. As the result, the first leader became Sofin Rinat. 5 seconds later finished Roman Gubanov. Maksim Kazakov won the third place.

The solemn awarding ceremony was held on the Glade Azau, near the bottom of Elbrus, on 18th May. The main hero of Red Fox Elbrus Race became Roman Gubanov, who has taken a part in three kinds of program. All participants have got the valuable prizes, cups and presents from organisers and sponsors of Festival. To the accompaniment of champagne splashes, Red Fox Elbrus Race was announced as accomplished. Thanks to the hearty welcome of local population and well-coordinated work of the organisers, Red Fox Elbrus Race went off on the best stage.
