<em><br />Source: http://www.skyrunning.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=182&Itemid=59</em><br /><br /><p><img src="http://www.skyrunning.com/images/news/oihana-kortrazar_web.jpg" alt="Women's winner Spaniard Oihana Kortazar" title="Women's winner Spaniard Oihana Kortazar" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="219" height="160" align="left" />The first leg of the 2011<strong> European Skyrunning Championships</strong> held in Switzerland today had some surprises in store: the men’s winner <strong>Robert Krupicka</strong> from the Czech Republic and the women’s winner, <strong>Oihana Kortazar</strong>, fresh from her victoryu in the World Series Zegama race in Spain.</p><p>The winning national teams, based on the results of three men and one woman, were <strong>Spain</strong>, <strong>Italy</strong> and new entry <strong>Russia</strong>. </p><p><img src="http://www.skyrunning.com/images/david lopez_web.jpg" alt="David Lopez at the summit" title="David Lopez at the summit" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="160" height="219" align="right" />Nearly <strong>500 athletes</strong> from twelve European nations competed over the <a href="http://www.international-skyrace.org/index.php?navi=&unternavi=&spr=s3" target="_blank">International SkyRace®</a> course:  <strong>30 km</strong> long with a<strong> 1,850m vertical climb</strong>. Weeks of rain and heavy storms left their mark with more snow than usual around the <strong>2,627m Campaneda Pass</strong> making for an extremely demanding technical descent where seasoned skyrunners artfully out-manouvred their rivals. </p><p>Krupicka, who won the race over a reduced course three years ago, was determined to make the day his. At the pass he had a five minute advantage over Spaniard <strong>Luis Hernando</strong> and Italian <strong>Mikhail Mamleev</strong> closing in 2h39’59”, the third best time ever, but far from <strong>Marco De Gasperi’s</strong> 2h32’03” record. Hernando and Mamleev finished second and third respectively.</p><p>Twentyseven year-old Kortazar is an athlete we’re going to be seeing a lot more of. After her strong win less than two weeks ago in Zegama, she led the course from start to finish closing in 3h18’46”. 2010 world champion <strong>Emanuela Brizio</strong> suffered the ascent, but her downhill talent and experience stood her in good stead to overtake four competitors to finish second. </p><p><img src="http://www.skyrunning.com/images/news/medals_web.jpg" alt="European medals" title="European medals" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="219" height="160" align="left" />Third was Spain’s <strong>Nuria Dominquez</strong> who overtook France’s <strong>Corinne Favre</strong> in the last three kilometres. He closed in 3h57’39”, still more than 3 seconds short of Briton Rob Jebb’s record set in 2005. In the women’s field,Spain’s <strong>Abanzeta Kortazar</strong>, a local athlete, led confidently from start to finish with a time of 4h42’50”. <p>Kortazar’s near ten minute lead at the half way mark closed to just over a minute’s advantage with reigning world champion,<strong> Emanuela Brizio</strong>, hot on her heels, closing the gap in 4h43’29”, short of her 4h38’19” record time set in 2009. France’s <strong>Corinne Favre</strong> crossed the line in third position, but with a penalty, slips to fourth position at this time. With the points accrued in two races she now leads the World Series ranking. </p><p>In the men’s field, Briton <strong>Tom Owens</strong> showed his mettle, closing less than a minute and a half behind Jornet. Third, Spaniard <strong>Miguel Heras</strong>, just topping the four hour mark with 4h02’52”.</p><p><img src="http://www.skyrunning.com/images/news/jornet_zegama.jpg" alt="Jornet is applauded at the half-way mark" title="Jornet is applauded at the half-way mark" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="160" height="219" align="right" />In stark contrast with last year’s snow-covered course, today’s dry hot conditions took their toll on many runners and probably any chance of breaking the standing records. </p><p><strong>517 athletes from eight countries</strong> lined up at the start of this extremely popular marathon with a gruelling<strong> 2,736m vertical climb </strong>over three summits. <br /><em>Source: www.skyrunning.com<br /><br /></em>Italian <strong>Marco De Gasperi</strong> opened the 2011 international skyrunning calendar with a new record in the <strong>Arles Tech Vertical Kilometre</strong>, Sunday, May 8 in the south of France.  In a class of his own, he sliced nearly five minutes off the race record in the first stage of the 2011 Skyrunner® World Series, reaching the summit of the 1,000m vertical climb in 37’03”. <br /><table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" class="two_col_table_1"><tbody><tr><td class="left_col_table_1"> <p class="small_text"> </p> <br /></td> <td class="right_col_table_1"> <br /><br /> <p class="MsoNormal"><img style="float: left" src="http://www.skyrace.ru/fs/files/1933/winners_web.jpg" alt="" /></p></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><br />Second was Russian<strong> Mikhail Mamleev</strong> in 39’15” and third, Spaniard <strong>Luis Hernando</strong> in 39’47”.<p>The very strong women’s field was led by Spaniard <strong>Mireia Mirò</strong> who closed in 46’28”, nearly three minutes ahead of France’s <strong>Stephanie Jimenez</strong> (49’22”) and <strong>Corinne Favre</strong> (49’42”), ex skyrunning world champion and co-organiser of the event.  Reigning world champion<strong> Emanuela Brizio</strong> had an unusually bad day, struggling to the summit in 9th position in 53’26”.</p><p>De Gasperi, twice Vertical Kilometer® world record holder, said “I felt very comfortable with the course and could have gone faster. It’s somewhat longer than the other VKs but I believe I can knock some more off today’s time.”</p><p>Mirò’s recipe was a little different.  After finishing an intensive season of ski mountaineering where she  conquered the individual and vertical world titles, her final race was last Sunday where she came second in Italy’s famous Mezzalama.  Rather than specific training for the Vertical Kilometer®, she conceded herself a week’s rest - an excellent choice as it turned out.</p><p>To celebrate the day’s success, France Skyrunning race organisers Marc Villa and Corinne Favre hosted a lunch for participants, volunteers and supporters with a gigantic, steaming paella, local wines and the season’s first cherries from the nearby town of Ceret, renowned for its produce.</p><p>The Skyrunner® World Series second stage May 29 will see some of the world’s top runners compete at the <strong><a href="http://sites.google.com/site/zegamaaizkorrieng/" target="_blank">Maratòn Alpina Zegama-Aizkorri SkyRace®</a></strong> in Spain’s Basque Country and the Series’ first Trial will take place on the same day, with the <strong><a href="http://www.zccr.gr/index.php?lang=en" target="_blank">Ziria Cross Country SkyRace®</a></strong> in Greece’s Corinthian Gulf.</p><p><a href="http://s4.e-monsite.com/2011/05/08/13505863classement-sws-2011-arles-sur-tech-kilometre-vertical-pdf.pdf" target="_blank">Race results</a></p><a href="http://www.skyrunning.com/images/results/2011_sws_ranking_1.pdf" target="_blank">2011 Skyrunner® World Series Ranking</a> (pdf)<br /><br /><em><br /><br /></em>
